Become an Active Bystander

Guardian: Identify. Protect. Respond.™ is a 90-minute program, offered virtually or in person, that teaches the life skills necessary to become a Guardian.

Guardians are active participants in the safety and security of their families and communities.

Guardian: Identify. Protect. Respond.™ builds off SCN’s BeAware: An Introduction to Situational Awareness™ and focuses on mindset and concrete skills that include identifying suspicious people, vehicles, and packages — principles critical to protecting yourself, your family, and community institutions — as well as principles surrounding how to respond during emergencies.

A small segment on de-escalation skills, covered more in-depth in SCN’s Navigating Conflict: The Power of De-Escalation, is also included.

Learn skillsets that help you identify, protect, and respond to all hazards, enabling you to become an active bystander in your community.

This course is designed for all community members and especially staff members of a facility within the community.

Topics Covered:

  • Who is a Guardian?
  • Identifying suspicious people, vehicles, and packages
  • Ways to protect your community
  • How to become an active bystander by responding to incidents and situations
Why was this course developed?

Over the last several years, we have seen increased levels of hate crimes, antisemitic incidents, and physical violence directed at the Jewish people, both around the world and in North America. Since October 2018, four deadly attacks have been carried out on the Jewish community in North America. In the same time frame, law enforcement has disrupted numerous plots aimed against Jewish organizations just in the United States.

While we cannot pick the time and date of the next incident that will impact our community, we can choose to prepare by investing time, effort, resources, and energy in sound safety and security strategies and practices to keep our families safe and our community secure. A critical component of these efforts relates to training. Simply put, training saves lives. Training and exercise provide critical skills while empowering our community and enhancing resiliency.

How was this course developed?

In every circumstance, attack, escalation, or confrontation, everyday people are the first to encounter — and have a chance at thwarting or mitigating — what could be a devastating incident. From BeAware to Countering Active Threat Training to Stop the Bleed, we understand that not only do we need to notify professional first responders of a problem or emergency, but that it will take them some time to respond. We often see that notification to professional law enforcement or first responders is delayed because bystanders are passive…either ignoring or deciding to “video” the incident.

Guardian seeks to empower people to be “Active Bystanders.” The actions of normal people can make a difference, and even save lives.
