- Methods to reduce risk at the airport, in transit, at a hotel, and around one’s destination
Why was this course developed?
We have more control over our safety when we are in “our environment.” We are more familiar with the areas we live and work in. We have a better understanding of what normal activity looks like, and more importantly, what suspicious activity looks like. We often have a good idea of where important locations are, such as hospitals, law enforcement offices, and public buildings. We also likely have an idea of where the “areas to avoid” are. However, traveling can reduce our familiarity and thereby increase our chances of becoming a victim of crime.
Often, criminal activity is random and unpredictable. However, time after time, we have seen evidence that criminals target victims who look vulnerable. Vulnerability comes in many forms, but we’ve all heard the statement “Don’t look like a tourist!” Regardless of where we travel, there are proactive measures we can take to ensure we are not an easy target.
Simply being aware of the threat of crime, and alert to what can be done to mitigate or prevent it, will go a long way to keeping us safe in both personal and professional travel. While we will not pick the time and date of the next incident, we can choose to engage, prepare, and invest time, effort, resources, and energy in sound safety and security strategies and practices to keep our families safe and our community secure. A critical component of these efforts relates to training.
