John Colangelo
Community Security Director, Hartford CT
John Colangelo joined the Secure Community (SCN) network in June 2021 as the first Community Security Director for the Jewish Federation of Greater Hartford. Mr. Colangelo administers a communal security program that provides security consultations, building/organizational assessments, training/drills, and threat mitigation to Jewish organizations, including schools, daycare centers, synagogues, camps, assisted living facilities, and various other Jewish facilities.
Before joining the Secure Community Network, Mr. Colangelo served as a police officer for 29 years, 24 of those with the Town of Canton, retiring at the rank of Detective. In addition to extensive investigative work, Mr. Colangelo served as a Field Training Officer and conducted Critical Incident Management training. He was assigned as the town’s terrorism liaison after 9/11 and was a member of the regional Emergency Services Team.
Mr. Colangelo was the advisor to the Juvenile Review Board, a juvenile offender diversionary program, spearheaded the department college internship program, and served as the primary liaison with state and federal agencies with responsibility for large-scale multi-jurisdictional investigations. He was a national and international presenter on the importance of interdepartmental collaboration and served on the regional Multi-Disciplinary Team investigating crimes against children and the Internet Crimes Against Children task force. As Detective, Mr. Colangelo was responsible for developing operational plans for high-risk police operations along with community events.
Mr. Colangelo has earned a lifesaving award from both the Canton Police Department and the American Heart Association and was twice named Officer of Year. He holds an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice from Tunxis Community College.
