Director, Vermont State Police

Matthew Birmingham serves as the Commander of the Vermont State Police. Col. Birmingham has been with the Vermont State Police since 1998. He started his career as a trooper assigned to the Rutland Barracks. In 2002, he transferred to the Vermont Drug Task Force as a criminal investigator and moved up through the ranks of the state police as commander of the Vermont Drug Task Force, commander of Special Investigations. 

The majority of Col. Birmingham’s career has been spent focused on fighting the opiate epidemic facing the state, and Birmingham will continue to make this one of his top priorities. He continues to maintain the strong relationships that the state police enjoys with every community in Vermont through a commitment to professionalism, accountability, and transparency.
