Michael Goldsmith
Regional Security Advisor, Tidewater, Virginia
Michael Goldsmith joined the Secure Community Network (SCN) in April 2023 as Regional Security Advisor for the Tidewater Region of Virginia. In this role, Goldsmith works with the local Jewish community to enhance physical, procedural, and personal protective measures to ensure the safety of those who live, work, recreate, and worship in his area of responsibility. He also assists with the development of emergency action plans as well as coordinating with local first responders and emergency managers.
Goldsmith has over 34 years of public safety experience both as a law enforcement officer and as Deputy City Manager for the City of Norfolk, Virginia. While with the Norfolk Police Department he worked in patrol operations, special operations, criminal and administrative investigations, and Homeland Security. He was appointed as the Chief of the department in 2012.
In 2016, Goldsmith moved into city management as Norfolk’s Deputy City Manager for Public Safety. In this role he directed a portfolio that included Police, Fire-Rescue, Emergency Management, and Community Mental Health. During his tenure with Norfolk, Goldsmith served as a Law Enforcement subject matter expert for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s Allied Command Transformation (NATO-ACT) while they developed their Urbanization Concept and Doctrine, participating in exercises at the NATO Defense College in Rome, Italy and the Defense Concepts and Doctrine Center in Shrivenham, England.
Goldsmith earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Sociology from Old Dominion University as well as a Master’s in Business Administration from the Mason School of Business at the College of William and Mary.
